The education in Saudi Arabia has 5 levels; the primary level, intermediate, secondary, vocational, and tertiary. The education system starts with pre-primary education which id offered to students entering primary school. However, there are options for pre-primary which are; kindergarten and pre-school. These two are offered by private and international schools. Children joining pre-primary, pre-school or kindergarten should be above 3 years.
Next, is primary education whereby a child joins at the age of six old, up to grade six where children should be around 11 years old. Nevertheless, there are schools that offer services of keeping young children till 17:00 hours for working mothers. According to Mackey (89), the primary education is free and open to everybody in Saudi Arabia. In addition, primary education through college is free and open to every Saudi citizen. The Saudi education system is under the jurisdiction of the Ministry of Education, and the Ministry of Higher Education.
After primary education, Saudi offers intermediate education which takes three years. This is for children at the age of 11-14. Moreover, after intermediate, there is secondary education that lasts for another three years. After finishing intermediate education, students have a chance to either join specialized secondary education or general secondary education offered through technical education. After successfully completing the secondary education, and passing the official tests, students are awarded a Secondary Diploma certificate in their respective schools. The Secondary Diploma is offered to all schools, private, public and even international. After a student gets a Secondary Diploma, they are now free to enroll for higher education in Universities (Ministry of Education, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia). Most of them enroll in universities in their home country, while other enroll in other countries.
