This semester you will be responsible for completing four summary papers. Each summary paper
will provide you the opportunity to show an understanding of the recently discussed theoretical
material. The papers are not meant to be speculative or based on opinion- they are purely academic
in the sense that they will be reflective of fact and the current state of criminological knowledge.
Each paper will discuss theoretical foundations as well as any related empirical findings (support
or opposition) and, when possible, resultant policy implications.
Each summary paper will be submitted on Blackboard during the week of the respective due date.
Summaries must be saved and submitted as either a .doc or .docx file.
Standard Requirements:
3 pages in length, double-spaced
12-point font, Times New Roman or Arial
Minimal heading (name and date only)
Proper grammar, syntax, punctuation, etc.
APA formatting, if/when appropriate
Absence of first-person or opinion-based language

After reading Chapters 33 and 35 in Cullen et al. discuss Stafford and Warr’s
reconceptualization of deterrence theory and how it can be used to explain deterrence
experienced by armed robbers.

After reading Chapters 4 and 6 in Cullen et al. discuss how biological and psychological
theories may individually AND conjunctively explain why some individuals commit crime
and some do not.

After reading Chapters 8 and 9 in Cullen et al. discuss how one’s environment can
influence the propensity or likelihood to commit crime. Explain how/why some individuals
in the same neighborhood may commit crime and some may not.

After reading Chapters 11 and 12 in Cullen et al. discuss how one can be influenced by the
individuals around him/her and be moved toward criminal activity. Refer specifically to
