I would then need to find some additional information about my target market including; how large is this target market? what are the preferences of those that fall into this group? I would also need to research my competitors. I may choose to assess businesses that are similar and very popular in my area and I may also choose to look at some brands with a large percentage of market share. For instance, I might explain a little about MAC, L’Oreal and Revlon as my main competitors. You would explain in the section on differentiation how your firm is different to others in the industry (What is your competitive advantage?). Research is also necessary for your discussion on the external market environment. You will need to find information about how much much money the industry makes and whether its growing or declining. Also, you will need to discuss what kinds of trends are affecting the industry. For instance, are make-up customers more interested in brands that are eco-friendly? Are they concerned about moisturizing or all- natural ingredients? Do women in my target market prefer to shop for make-up online? How would my company account for such trends? As indicated above, you should also cite your text or scholarly materials to support your strategic decisions. For example, regarding my make-up business, I might cite the text when I discuss how technological changes within the external market might impact customer preferences. I could then use this as support for my idea to provide customers with a free smartphone app to virtually ‘try on’ different shades of lipstick.
