There are various different types of policing agencies throughout the United States. Policing agencies in this country are divided into one of three jurisdictions; they are federal, state, and local. Each law enforcement agency is bound by an area of operation called a jurisdiction. It is the duty of each of these law enforcement agencies, within their perspective jurisdiction, to protect and serve the citizens in this country, state, county, and city. Currently there are a total of 17,876 law enforcement agencies in the United States. “This includes 12,766 local police departments, 3,067 sheriff’s departments, 49 state police agencies, 1,481 special police agencies, and 65 federal agencies.” (Policing in America, pg. 61) Local law enforcement agencies are responsible for ensuring the safety and protection of the citizens within their jurisdiction, responding to emergency calls, enforcing traffic laws, crime detection & prevention, community service, preform criminal investigation, keep up community relations, and provide detention for adults and juveniles.
