Module 1 -Case

Rhetorical Appeals

Assignment: After reading the essay, write a response to the letter. Your response should include one example of each: ethos, pathos, and logos. The response should be 2 pages, double spaced.

• Consider King’s emotional appeal to his audience; his attention to logic, and what represents ethos within the letter.

In order to do well on this assignment, you must not only write well, but also provide detailed examples of what makes this person ethical, respected, and well-regarded. What does he or she do, say, or have that causes people to listen to the advice, or consider the perspectives, that he or she provides? In short, why do you think this person is ethical? Why?

Narrative and Descriptive Writing

Narrative Essay

For the case you will write a three-four page, double spaced, narrative that tells a story, and you will use what you learned about description to help you bring the two kinds of writing together. Your narrative can be about any topic, but you will want to choose something that gives you plenty of information and ways to describe and tell the story. Consider using readings in the Background Info section of the module to help you think more about narrative.

Assignment: Write a three-four page, double spaced, narrative story incorporating description.

When writing make sure you consider ethos, pathos, logos and the rhetorical situation.

Expectations

Module 2 -SLP

Descriptive Essay

For this Session Long Project assignment I want you to go to a place like a mall or park and sit down and watch people for thirty minutes. Take notes on what your senses tell you. What do you hear, see, or smell, for example? Choose something that you saw during your observation and write a two-page description of the moment in time. Maybe you saw something in the first five-minutes of your observation or maybe it was the last five-minutes. Then before you start on the assignment below reflect on your observations.

Assignment: Write a two page, double spaced, descriptive essay using language that helps your audience experience what you experienced. Be detailed and descriptive. Remember to show not tell.

Writing to Evaluate

For this case assignment you will want to write an evaluation. You will want to choose a home product or service that you use often, and write an evaluation of that product or service. For example, I am bald and shave my head often. Choosing razors has become a tedious chore for me. Razors are expensive, some are poorly designed, and some do not last very long. As you can see I have already set categories to evaluate the razor that I use: cost, design/use, longevity. I might also compare my current razor to ones I have used before as well. The key is to evaluate the product or service fairly and objectively. Think about your audience as a group of people like yourself, who use the same product or service, but would like more information about how well the service or product is provided.

Assignment: Write a four-five page, double-spaced evaluation essay.

• Introduce your product or service. What is it and why have you decided to evaluate it?
• Discuss how you plan to evaluate the product or service.
• Explain both your experience with the product and those of others (cite any other reviews or evaluations that you find on the product or service)

The list of the top 100 blogs ranges from business and politics, to sports and entertainment. You will need to spend some time looking through these to find one you like. Or, you may evaluate a blog that you currently follow.

• Include an introduction and conclusion.
• Create categories or criteria forhowyou intend to evaluate your topic.
• Consider the design of the blog as well as the content/writing.

Evaluating, Narrating, and Describing

For this case assignment, you will write a three-four page essay that evaluates the essay “The Yellow Wall-Paper. A Story.” For the case assignment you have the option to decide how best to evaluate Gilman’s essay. Consider what you have learned so far.

Module 4 -SLP

In this session-long project, you will write a four-five page essay that not only evaluates Brady’s “Why I Want a Wife,” but also includes description and the rhetorical appeals. You will want to consider how the essay appeals to the emotions, the credibility, and the logic of the readers. You will consider how and where the author appeals to the emotions of a reader. Consider whether the author makes sense or has logical points. Evaluate whether or not you believe what Brady says remains true today. This essay should illustrate your knowledge of the rhetorical appeals, description, and evaluation.

Reading and Writing about Arguments

Welcome to the fifth case assignment. In this assignment, you will write a four-five page, double spaced, argument about any topic you would like. Controversial topics are often what people look for to write about, but using local issues, issues you are familiar with, or issues less controversial (whether to use a real Christmas tree or a fake one, for example) work just as well. Sometimes, using less controversial topics are easier to work with than highly charged topics, but in any case, choose a topic you already know something about. The focus here will be on how well you can present your argument in writing. Use the following scheme to help you.

Assignment: Write a four-five page, douple spaced, argumentative essay.

• Introduce the topic and why it is important
• Express your position on the topic
• What do others say about your topic
• Refute or consider what others say about your topic
• Use statistics, facts, or other evidence to support your position
• Conclude by reminding readers of your topic, its importance, and your position

Module 5 -SLP

While browsing online, you found a “help wanted” ad for “your dream job,” working for the world-famous MegaCorp. (Before going any further, stop and think about what “your dream job” would consist of. Have fun with this! Write some notes about the job, and refer to them as you proceed.)

Per instructions in the ad, you immediately contacted MegaCorp by phone. The person in HR advised you to send them your resume by snailmail, accompanied by a cover letter of not more than two pages. In the cover letter, you should introduce yourself, and explain why you’re the person they’re looking for. Needless to say, the letter must be perfect with respect to grammar, spelling and style. First impressions are important! This letter is the first part of your assignment.

Next, you have to prepare your family and friends for the possible change in your life. If you get the job, you’ll have to relocate to another city, 1,000 miles away. Write a one-page email to a Significant Other (mother, father, sibling, friend — take your pick) explaining the job, why you’re applying for it, and why it would be worth the move. This email is the second part of your assignment.

Next, you have to get a day off your present job, to meet a representative of MegaCorp at a nearby location. Write a one-page email to your boss, asking for a day off. Explain the job, and descirbe the opportunity if offers. For the purposes of this exercise, you can assume:

(1) Your boss needs you, and giving you a day off would be difficult for her.

(2) Your boss, being honest, has advised you that your present job is a dead end (perhaps because you’re about to leave the military). She has urged you to find something else, because…

(3) Your boss is also a friend.

This email is the third part of the assignment.

• You have three small separate assignments that can be included in one document. Please label each assignment properly. You will submit a two-page assignment and two one-page assignments as described above.
• Consider your audience when writing.
